You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out to Move Forward

We wait for clarity. We wait until we feel ready. We wait for the right time, the right opportunity, or some kind of sign that tells us we’re making the right decision.

But some of the biggest changes in my life began when I had none of those things. I just knew I couldn’t stay where I was.

There have been times when moving forward didn’t look particularly brave or impressive. Sometimes it was simply getting through the day, making one decision, trying again, or choosing not to give up on myself.

And I’ve learned that those small decisions matter.

The Parts Nobody Sees

When I wrote Champions Are Made in the Dark, I wanted to tell the story behind the strength people eventually see. Because we often meet people after the difficult part.

We see what they achieved. We see the confidence, the success, the title or the result. What we don't see are all the moments that came before it — the doubt, the setbacks, the days they wanted to stop, and the things they carried quietly while the rest of the world carried on.

Those are the moments I call the dark. Not because everything is hopeless there, but because so much of our becoming happens when nobody is watching.

We Put Too Much Pressure on the Next Step

Sometimes we think moving forward means having a five-year plan, setting a huge goal, or completely reinventing ourselves.

It doesn’t.

Moving forward can be much quieter than that. It can be saying no to something that no longer feels right. It can be starting something before you feel completely ready. It can be changing direction. It can be admitting that what you once wanted isn't what you want anymore.

And sometimes it is simply giving yourself permission to stop standing still.

You don't need to see the whole road. You just need enough courage for the next part of it.

Strength Doesn't Always Look Like Strong

One of the biggest things writing Champions Are Made in the Dark reminded me of is that strength rarely looks the way we imagine it will while we're actually living through it.

We recognise strength much more easily afterwards. We look back and see what we survived, what we learned and how far we've come.

But while we're in it? It can feel messy, uncertain and sometimes lonely.

Some of the strongest decisions I've made happened when I didn't feel strong at all. I simply made the next decision, and then the next one.

Give Yourself Room to Become

You are allowed to become someone different. Your priorities can change. Your dreams can change. The things you once tolerated can change. Even what success means to you can change.

That isn't failure. That's growth.

Sometimes the person who comes out of the dark isn't the person who went into it.

And maybe that's the point.

Start Where You Are

You don't need January. You don't need Monday. You don't need everything perfectly organised. And you definitely don't need to have all the answers.

Start where you are.

Ask yourself:

What do I need right now?

What am I ready to leave behind?

What is one thing I can do next?

Then do that one thing.

The rest doesn't have to be clear yet. There will always be another decision, another turn and another opportunity to adjust your direction.

Champions Are Made in the Dark is about the strength built in the moments nobody sees. But eventually, there comes a time to step out of the dark and ask:

Where do I go from here?

You don't have to know the whole answer. Just take the next step.

Forward is still forward.
